Climate change . . . where do you stand?
The subject of Global Warming, Global Climate Change, or whatever you want to call it is not settled easily and causes great debate among alot of people.
Frankly, I have always felt that no matter where the science ends up on this issue that it is better to do something, then nothing. Besides, energy and water conservation is always a good thing not matter what side of the argument you stand on.
Old clothes...what to do with them
There is research that indicates that the average American throws away 68 pounds of clothing a year. Why in the world would anyone throw away clothing when there are so many great, and easy, alternatives to getting rid of worn-out or fashion-challenged apparel.
Here are a few ways:
1) Hand me down. If you are not an only child, or the only male or female in your family, you know what this is.
Save 500,000 barrels of oil cooking your spaghetti noodles.
One of my favorite authors, Harold McGee, is a columist in the New York Times and the writer of a feature called The Curious Cook. I wish I would have seen this a few weeks ago when it launched, but this is an interesting tale regardless. Two men have built an ocean-going boat out of nothing but junk (including 15,000 used plastic soda bottles) and are heading to Hawaii to demonstrate their concern for the junk that is collecting in our oceans. You can follow their story at junkraft.com
Plastic Bags - You should really think twice!
We have always felt strongly about our use of plastic which is one of the reasons we sell our biodegradable garbage bags, flushable dog waste bags and our organic cotton shopping bags. But read some of these facts surrounding the common plastic bag and it may give you pause the next time you are buying groceries.
Plastic bottles - yech!
I had always thought those polycarbonate drinking bottles were cool. You know the ones that are clear, but come in all kinds of neat colors. But there was always something about them that bugged me when I drank out of them after they had been sitting for a while filled with water -- the water tasted terrible and had a chemical smell to it. But I just wrote it off to the cost of water portability.

A safer CFL. . .
Ok, let's face it, CFL's have mercury. There is no getting around it. Mercury is needed in order for the bulb to provide light. And mercury is dangerous!
